I should be enjoying a bottle of 12 year old Glenmorangie. After all, what’s more appropriate than drinking single malt at Wooster? However I am not thanks to Ohio’s Byzantine liquor laws that require cash only transactions. I’m already paying sixty dollars, plus tax, for the bottle, there’s no way I’m also paying ATM fees on top of that. You win this round Ohio.

I’m sitting out on the deck, the sky is a gorgeous blue, nary a cloud in the sky. In front of me is my dinner, a steak cooked on the grill, potato salad, and a green salad with a bottle of Oberon to wash it down. Life does not get more idyllic than this.

In honor of the return of good TV I bought myself a bottle of 15 year old The MacAllen. Obviously this is extremely good Scotch, smooth the whole way with a light aftertaste. If single-malt is your thing I highly recommend giving it a taste.

On the agenda tonight is a fine Irish whiskey, Bushmills. It’s very smooth, especially with an ice cube as is my wont. Possibly a bit more of a refined drink than the single malts I normally drink, but it makes for a nice change of pace.

I’m drinking Talisker tonight. It is certainly a challenging scotch. Smells very strongly of smoke, with a taste that is similarly complex. The classic description of the scotch is that it has a “peaty” taste, and if I knew what peat tasted like I’m sure I’d agree. It’s not my favorite single malt, that is still probably MacAllen, but Talisker is a nice change of pace.

I cracked open a bottle of Finca La Linda, a 2006 Argentinean Malbec. I’ve been wanting to sample Malbecs for a while now. It’s not all that common a wine in this part of the world and I’m always on the lookout for something different. The Malbec came across as a touch astringent, like red wine should, and at first glance a bit more fruity than I would normally like. I didn’t find it to be especially excellent, or bad. Probably about what you’d expect from an eleven dollar bottle of wine.
